National Log1 Contest

The Log1 Contest provides an excellent opportunity for a school to participate in a competition similar to our national convention contests and compete against schools from across the country and the world, while staying right at their home school. Students compete only against other students with similar math course background.

The Log1 contest is FREE, but participation is restricted to schools with active Mu Alpha Theta chapters.  All students at the school may participate in the contest, but only members and associates of Mu Alpha Theta are eligible for prizes or for scores to be counted toward the top awards. Sponsors are responsible for entering the names of their eligible members and associates before the end of Round 3 if they want students to win prizes.

Mu Alpha Theta awards 100 e = $271.83 to each of the top ten schools in each region, for a total of $10,873.20 in prize money. If there is a tie for 10th place, the award money will be split. The National Office will also provide some TI graphing calculators, math games, and other prizes as "door prizes" to US participants that take all three tests. Final award recipient information for the 2019-2020 contest should be available on the Log1 website by April 1, 2020. International schools are only eligible for prize money if they are able to receive US checks, money orders, or wire transfers. Wire transfers incur a $40 fee. We cannot ship prizes to international schools.

Registration will begin in October 2019.

Important Dates (subject to change):

Round 1: November 1 - December 13, 2019. Round 1 test scores entered by December 20, 2019.

Round 2: December 1, 2019 - January 17, 2020. Round 2 test scores entered by January 24, 2020.

Round 3: January 13 - February 21, 2020. Round 3 test scores entered by February 28, 2020.

Contest Details:
The contest consists of three testing rounds. All tests include 15 open answer questions to be completed in 30 minutes without the use of a calculator. Materials are only available for download electronically, in pdf format, to participants. Photocopying required.

The first round will include two topic tests. Students may take either the "Geometry" or the "Sequences and Series" Test.  They may NOT take both tests. Once one test is taken and scores are uploaded by the sponsor, students may try the other test for fun.

The second round will also include two topic tests. Students may take either the "Equations and Inequalities" or the "Applications" Test.

The third round will be an Individual Test of general mathematics on level appropriate topics.

Students new to this competition should find enough easy problems, so they will not be discouraged, but enough hard problems so that experienced competitors are challenged and can be distinguished from one another by score for the purposes of awards.

  • Mu division is for students who are taking a Calculus course. Mu students are responsible for knowing topics in all divisions.
  • Alpha division is for students who are in math courses above Algebra 2 but who have not taken calculus. No calculus is to be included at this level.
  • Theta division is for students who have not taken a class above Algebra 2, such as statistics, precalculus, or calculus. There will be no trigonometry questions other than right triangle trigonometry or law of sines and law of cosines. These students will have completed Algebra 1 and Geometry, most likely.

Each student test score will be scaled to account for varying test difficulty. The test score is divided by the maximum test score for that test and math division and multiplied by 100. A student’s overall score will be the sum of their scaled scores on the three tests and will thus be a whole number between zero and three hundred.
